Sharpen Your Axe

Once upon a time a very strong woodcutter landed a great job with a timber merchant.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him where he’d work.

The first day, the woodcutter brought down 18 trees.

“Congratulations,” the boss said.

“Keep it up!”

Motivated by the boss’ words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but could only bring down 15 trees.

The third day he tried even harder, but could only fell 10 trees.

Day after day he was bringing down less and less trees.

“I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought.

He went to the boss and apologised, saying that he couldn’t understand what was going on.

The boss asked, “When was the last time you sharpened your axe?”

“Sharpen? I haven’t had time to sharpen my axe. I’ve been so busy cutting down trees…”

Moral of the Story

Just like the woodcutter, it’s easy to get consumed by our work.

Client deadlines, budgeting forecasts, kids’ lunches, after-school sport… The first thing we drop in this frenetic life is own health.

But we need to take time to recharge our bodies and brains.

Create time to exercise, mediate, spend time with friends, read & learn.

You are the axe. Don’t just chop away.

Be purposeful in preparing yourself to be sharp.
