My mother-in-law bought a fridge online.
She was delighted. She told me what happened:
“I found the exact one I wanted, but it was too expensive. Then, I kept seeing ads on my phone. Yesterday, they were having a huge sale – 40% off! So I bought it. It was magic!”
It wasn’t magic. It was re-marketing.
But I didn’t tell her that.
I didn’t explain how a little piece of computer code had been tracking her around the Internet, testing different ads and offers until it landed one that convinced her to buy.
Some think this is manipulative. Maybe it is.
But marketing also makes people happy.
